The Mrs. Math Story
Hi! I'm Amanda Stunes, founder of Mrs. Math and a passionate educator with over 18 years of teaching experience. I've always loved mathematics - so much so that I took advanced college math courses simply because I enjoyed learning them while earning my degree in education.
After graduating from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Science in Education, I began teaching in a public elementary school in 2008. It didn't take long to realize that my true passion was mathematics, so I transitioned to middle school, where I taught everything from 6th grade math through Algebra I for high school credit. While teaching at a Title I middle school, I was honored to receive a Teacher of the Year award after my students achieved some of the highest math growth scores on Arizona's state assessments.
In 2015, I earned endorsements in both mathematics and gifted education, allowing me to work with students across a wide range of ages and abilities, from kindergarten through 12th grade. Most recently, I taught elementary gifted students in a small-group enrichment setting and developed curriculum for my district's gifted program, with lessons later featured at gifted education conferences and professional development events for educators.​
When the pandemic arrived, I unexpectedly discovered a passion for virtual teaching and for homeschooling my own children. I quickly saw how engaging, flexible, and meaningful learning could be in the home environment. After talking with a homeschooling friend, we recognized a need for a live, interactive, daily math program that combined high-quality instruction with meaningful relationships and a supportive learning community. That conversation became the beginning of Mrs. Math.
I believe students learn best when they feel known, encouraged, and actively engaged. My goal is to create a classroom where students aren't afraid to ask questions, where mistakes are seen as part of learning, and where math becomes something they can truly understand, not just memorize.
Today, one of my greatest joys is helping homeschool students build confidence, develop strong mathematical thinking, and discover that math can be both understandable and enjoyable. I'm grateful to be part of the homeschool community and look forward to supporting many more families in their educational journey.
